Flickr Panda: Regurg Rainbow

This one’s right up Nonsek’s alley: Flickr’s Explore Panda spews a stream of Flickr photos, 500 a day from among the millions of daily uploads. Random(ish) bits of populist art, delivered straight to your retinae.

The photos that emerge from the Panda’s laughing (snarling?) mug are selected based on Flickr’s “Interestingness Algorithm,” an automated rating system that, according to Flickr, ranks each photo based on: “Where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when; who marks it as a favorite; its tags, and many more things which are constantly changing.”

Ever-shifting curatorial criteria, we like. Selective enough to filter out the static, but variable enough to keep things chancy.

Explore Panda is functional as well as decorative: click on a photo before it disappears to view its Flickr page. We predict hours of obsessive fun in Nonsek’s future, watching and clicking, watching and clicking.

As for the choice of delivery vehicles: we’re not sure whether having a Chinese icon perform something that could be termed a “cultural purge” is naive coincidence or dark humor, but we like it either way.
