Poster Boy: Subway Cutup

When will Nonsek learn that behind every metaphor is a literal reality waiting to show us up? We talk about the cultural slice and dice, and Poster Boy lives it. The NYC artist cuts and pastes subway advertising to create sociopolitical truisms from commercial fiction.

Poster Boy has gotten plenty of press of late, including a NY Mag article and a recent shout-out on a popular trend forecasting site. What happens to a rogue artist’s cred when a commercial trendspotter decides he’s hot? Probably nothing, especially since they’re not really paying attention. The trend site said of the poster below: “…a McDonald’s ad was changed to read “McDorse The World.’ ” It actually started life as a Puma Store ad. Below McDorse is the original ad that spawned the mixdown shown above.

Poster Boy’s work is fleet (he sizes up the raw material while a train is at the stop, and pulls out his razor as it pulls away) and fleeting (subway workers tear it down as they find it). Luckily, the shutter is faster still, so you can view his cultural remixes on Flickr.
